Friends of the Library of Windham (F.L.O.W.) Award Scholarships
Surrounded by their community, Brian Broom-Peltz and Sarah Scannell
were recognized this past Saturday by the Friends of the Library of
Windham (F.L.O.W.). Amidst the energy of F.L.O.W.’s annual Strawberry
Festival and Book Fair, Broom-Peltz and Scannel were awarded this
year’s F.L.O.W. scholarships.
Brian Broom-Peltz is the son of Claude Peltz and Lousie Broom-Peltz of
Windham. A senior this past year at Salem High School, he is headed
to Tulane University in the fall to study engineering and political
science. In addition to being an active member of Salem High School’s
Debate Team and President of the Young Democrats, Broom-Peltz is a
three-season varsity athlete. This past year he co-organized “A Night
Without a Home” encouraging more than fifty of his classmates to sleep
in boxes and sleeping bags in the parking lot of Salem High School to
raise money and awareness for those who are homeless. Broom-Peltz is
this year’s recipient of the F.L.O.W. Annual Scholarship.
Sarah Scannell, daughter of Kevin and Sharon Scannell of Windham, was
awarded this year’s F.L.O.W. Mary Long Scholarship. Also a senior
this past year at Salem High School, Scannell has volunteered at
Windham’s Nesmith Library for many years and in 2008 was honored by
F.L.O.W. for her service to Nesmith Library, F.L.O.W., and the Windham
Community. Scannell, a pianist for over a decade, is president of
Salem High School’s German Club. She is also a member of the Key
Club, the Friends of Rachel Club, Amnesty International, and the
Actor’s Guild. Scannell will be attending DePaul University in the
fall as an English major with a focus in creative writing.
The F.L.O.W. scholarships, both in the amount of $2,000, are awarded
to a high school senior who is a Windham resident. Requirements
include a minimum 3.0 grade point average and three letters of
reference. Applicants for the F.L.O.W. Annual Scholarship may pursue
any college degree program. Applicants for the F.L.O.W. Mary Long
